“Safe Drinking Water through Installation of Deep Tube Wells” is the basic activity and forms the foundation of Water & Sanitation - A Way to Development Project (WS-W2D). The WS-W2D project installed 51 Tubewells in four blocks such as Sagar, Patharpratima, Kakdwip and Namkhana of South 24 Parganas of West Bengal.
BENEFITS
• Each Tubewell has its own TubeWell Management Committee which is responsible for maintaining the tubewell by the beneficiaries themselves with their own funds, thus creating an example of ownership concept.
• Immediate reduction in the incidence of waterborne diseases.
• After the Tubewell installations, time spent on fetching water from far away water source was saved so that the ladies might devote more time for the welfare of their children, their husbands and for themselves.
THE PERFORMANCE OF TUBEWELL 
TOILET
One time grant for toilet construction was given to 300 beneficiaries approx. in four blocks such as Kakdwip, Patharpratima, Sagar and Namkhana of Kakdwip Subdivision. All the beneficiaries are benefiting from Toilets in their household premises & have given away the habit of open field defecation thus reducing the incidence of Pollution & Diseases like Gastroenteritis, Giardiasis, Cholera, Worm Infestations etc. Moreover the dignity & safety of rural ladies is ensured as they need not to go out of their household premises alone in the dark night for defecation.

SMOKELESS CHULLAH
WS-W2D project gave Smokeless Chullah to 1000 families approx. in four blocks such as Kakdwip, Patharpratima, Sagar and Namkhana of Kakdwip Subdivision of South 24 Parganas.
The ladies of these 1000 families are presently doing all household cooking over the chullahs, the ladies thus are spared of many discomforts like Burning Eyes, Headache, Respiratory Problems (allergic asthmas due to excessive smoke of firewood) etc. Moreover it was reported that less firewood was consumed & cooking got completed in lesser time. In a nutshell the standard of life of rural women from these households visibly improved.

VALUE BASED ACTIVITIES OF SHG:
SHG formation, up-gradation and empowerment is one of the major thrust of WS-W2D Project. WS-W2D Project formed till date 217 SHG groups with approx. 3000 members in four blocks such as Kakdwip, Patharpratima, Sagar and Namkhana of Kakdwip Subdivision of South 24 Parganas. SHG groups are organized in 47 Village clusters and 6 Union Clusters. The 2117 SHGs have total fund of Rs.1,10,00000/- approx. in their bank account which is accumulated by their small savings. The amount is used for internal lending when emergency arises and also for economic development. The group members have also taken loan from Bank for agriculture purpose and successfully paid back the amount in due time. The SHG ladies have become so empowered so as to go themselves to Panchayat Offices, Banks, hospitals, Different Govt. Offices to solve their day to day needs. They are able to voice and protest against social vices like addiction to country liquor, Dowry, Trafficking and discrimination against Womenfolk, Child Marriage and Domestic Violence. Their value and respect in their own families have been enhanced as their husbands and other members realized their contribution to the all-round development of the family.

• Pass Book Amount of SHGs is Rs.37,27,583/- approx.
POULRTY FARMING :
IITD has given 15 chicks each to 900 families approx. in four blocks such as Kakdwip, Patharpratima, Sagar and Namkhana of Kakdwip Subdivision of South 24 Parganas for rearing under the condition that they would rear the chicks properly for economic development.WS-W2D projects’ Animal Resource Person has provided timely supervision, consultation, vaccination and treatment to all the chicks given to the benefiaries. WS – W2D project has been successful in building up an excellent rapport with the Govt. Vet Surgeons and Block Livestock Office who facilitated many Vet Camps within the area where more than 100 members of rural beneficiaries attended with their cattle and livestock. Poultry farming is profitable a suitable for rural condition. Almost all families have been able to get good profit from Poultry farming.

Since inception the project WS-W2D installed total 40 tubewells in its project area till end of March, 2016.

• Fund accumulated in NSCs: Rs.7,65,514/- for tubewell maintenance and repairing
• It started with one tube well in one village and now spread to 40 villages of 16 GPs of 4 blocks.
• Besides time to time repairing of Tubewells, accumulated fund is used as an Emergency Fund.
• Strong ownership concept, community involvement and active participation are established.
• Waste water management through water recharge is practiced.
